If you are planning to buy a property in Portugal—especially a secluded villa in the Algarve or a farmhouse in Alentejo—there is one budget line you cannot ignore: Fuel costs.

As a Buyer’s Representative helping international clients relocate, I often see people fall in love with a countryside property, only to realize later that the 40-minute commute to the nearest international school or supermarket will cost them €200+ per month in diesel.

Unlike the US or parts of the Middle East, fuel in Portugal is heavily taxed. Whether you are importing your car or buying locally, understanding the difference between Gasóleo (Diesel) and Sem Chumbo (Petrol) is critical for your monthly cost-of-living budget.

Here is what Home Buyers need to know about fueling their life in Portugal.

1. Quick Dictionary: What to Ask for at the Pump

When you pull into a station (Galp, BP, Repsol, or Prio), you won’t see “Regular” or “Premium.” You will see these terms. Knowing them prevents expensive engine mistakes.

• Gasóleo (Diesel): The most common fuel in Portugal. If you are buying a second-hand car here, it will likely be diesel.

• Black handle

• Gasolina Sem Chumbo 95 (Unleaded 95): The standard petrol for most smaller rental cars and hybrids.

  • Green Handle with “95” label.

• Gasolina Sem Chumbo 98 (Unleaded 98): High-performance petrol for sports cars (Porsche, Ferrari) or other performance vehicles.

  • Blue Handle with “98” label.

• GPL (LPG – Liquid Petroleum Gas): A cheaper alternative, but requires a converted engine.

💡 Buyer’s Tip:

“Simples” vs. “Aditivado”: You will often see two prices for diesel.

• Gasóleo Simples: The cheaper, standard diesel. Perfectly fine for most cars.

• Gasóleo Aditivado: Contains additives to clean the engine. It costs ~5-10 cents more per liter.

• My advice: Stick to Simples for daily driving, and treat your car to Aditivado once every 4 tanks to keep the injectors clean.

2. Current Fuel Prices (January 2026)

Fuel prices in Portugal fluctuate weekly based on government taxes and global oil prices. As of early 2026, here is what you should budget:

Note: Prices are generally cheaper at “Low Cost” supermarkets like Intermarché or Pingo Doce, and most expensive on the toll highways (Autoestradas).

3. Electric Cars: A Smart Move for Homeowners?

If you are buying a villa, one of the first upgrades we recommend is Solar Panels + EV Charger.

Portugal has excellent sun exposure, meaning you can essentially drive for “free” if you charge at home during the day.

However, the public charging network (Mobi.E) can be complex for newcomers.

• The Card System: You cannot just swipe a credit card at most chargers. You need a card from a provider like Miio or Via Verde Electric.

• The Cost: Public charging on highways is expensive (sometimes comparable to diesel). The savings happen when you charge at home.

4. How Location Impacts Your Property Value

When I assess a property for a client, I calculate the “Commute Tax.”

• The “Golden Triangle” (Quinta do Lago/Vale do Lobo): Everything is close. Uber is available. Fuel budget is low.

• The “Rustic Dream” (Silves/Loulé Hills): You get more land for your money, but you must drive everywhere.

  • Reality Check: A 20km drive to the school run = 40km round trip. Do that twice a day (drop off/pick up) = 80km.

  • Daily Cost: ~€8-10 in fuel.

  • Monthly Cost: €200+ just for school runs.

5. Summary: 3 Rules for Expats

1. Budget High: Assume fuel will cost €1.70/liter when planning your finances.

2. Buy Diesel or Hybrid: If you aren’t ready for full Electric, Diesel is still the king of resale value in Portugal.

3. Check the Garage: When viewing homes, check if the garage has a pre-installation for an EV Wallbox. It adds resale value.
